The first maxim of Descartes book in part 3 talks about how it was important to him to obey the laws of his country and the importance of religion. Growing up with his family at a young age he was instilled with certain values and guidelines to insure that he would try to better himself. To me this means that as a child most people are raised with certain rules that they are suppose to follow. People are brought up to follow religion and certain customs of their families. Descartes values played a huge part in becoming the man he wanted to be and he made sure that he lived up to the expectations of himself and his family.

I think that is how every human gets their values, through culture. It instills us values as well as a sense of belonging. I think he is right in some of his beliefs.

Indefinitely. Who you are is where you came from and who brought you there. Everyone is molded by the people closest to them and in most cases all children are their parents whether they like it or not. The values that others instill on you are the ones that create everything from your style of speech and the way you think through things for example how logical you are or as blunt as you may be, all of which come from those values. A persons culture is probably the strongest personal value one can have. Your culture consists of the many men and women who came before you generations ago and what ever you can learn from them could show you who you were meant to be, although the past doesn't determine your future its always used as a guide to determine your present which becomes your past and influences your future.
